Art and Nature Series: Caspar David Friedrich

Wanderer above the sea of fog

At CCH Live, we are sharing our favourite awe inspiring artworks of our beautiful world for you to enjoy from the comfort of your own homes.

Today we bring you a one of Caspar David Friedrich’s most moving works ‘Wanderer above the Sea of Fog’ (1817), picturing a cloudy mountain range in the quintessential Romantic style. In search of post-enlightenment ideals of individual truth, new life was revived into the art world. Friedrich innovated the landscape genre, adding an emotional focus instead of nature becoming a backdrop. Through the pursuit of the sublime, Friedrich turned to nature so that the viewer may not only see but feel the peaks and valleys and our relation to them as humans.
